November

It is now November 9, 2013, the woods behind our garden are doing a wonderful job of adding organic matter to our soil:

Fall leaves truly are a wonderful soil amendment.  Trees have a very large, deep, and expansive root system.  They bring up nutrients from a layer of the subsoil that vegetable roots have no hope of reaching.  When added to the top soil, these nutrients are slowly released into the soil where vegetable plants can incorporate them.

Here’s a broccoli plant still growing and making a head for us.  If it can grow faster than the cabbage worms eat the leaves, it will make a wonderful addition to a fall meal:

We used the last of our husk cherries (or ground cherries if you prefer) to bake a delicious husk cherry pie.  We introduced many customers this year to the venerable husk cherry, and if you like them fresh, they are amazing in pie form!  We can’t wait until next July when we have these fruits available again!

Finally, here are two more pictures emphasizing that while frost may have come, the growing season is indeed not over.  There are leaf lettuces, romaine lettuces, broccoli, green onions, carrots, beets, and kale still growing.  These are all field grown with no form of protection at all.
